Our Year of Celebrations come to a close....
May 19th 10.30am Solemn Mass of Pentecost Sunday
Pentecost Sunday, 1874, was the first Sunday after the Opening and Blessing of the as-yet unfinished Cathedral of St Stephen. It is appropriate then that we culminated our festivities of thanksgiving on this Feast of the Holy Spirit, Pentecost Sunday.
These celebrations have provided the Church of Brisbane with an opportunity to acknowledge and give thanks for the commitment and generosity of generations before us, as well as recognising our responsibility as the current custodians of this splendid sacred space.
We celebrated more than a building; we celebrated what we celebrate here every day – the gift of the life-giving power of the Spirit of God who transforms us all into Living Stones and witnesses to the corner stone, Jesus Christ. May this same Spirit come upon us afresh, transforming all that is stone into life and grace.
Apostolic Nuncio Archbishop Charles Balvo celebrated the Mass, assisted by Deacon Chad, and concelebrated by Archbishop Mark Coleridge with a host of bishops and priests – retired and active – from around Australia. Mass was followed by a family day in the cathedral precinct.

JUNE 2023 - CELEBRATION OF ORDINATIONS DURING THE PAST 150 YEARS
On 28th June 2023, dozens of priests processed into the Cathedral of St Stephen, Brisbane for a Mass commemorating all ordinations and priests who served the Archdiocese of Brisbane over the last 150 years. The first person ordained at the Cathedral of St Stephen was Martin Mullally in 1877, and the newest are the three deacons ordained priests on the feast of Sts Peter and Paul this year. There were also priests and bishops from other dioceses in Queensland in attendance, recognising the role played by Brisbane priests across the province. The 28th June Mass was the first of many celebrations planned for this sesquicentenary year, and it gathered about 90 priests for the Mass and about the same number for a lunch that followed. At the lunch Bishop James Foley, Emeritus of Cairns, spoke in his inimitable way of the cathedral where he was ordained priest. We also said thanks and farewell to Bishop Ken Howell as he prepares for his new mission in Toowoomba. |
