Welcome...
Welcome to our website.
The Cathedral of St. Stephen stands at the centre of the Catholic Archdiocese of Brisbane and in the heart of city life. Our parish also encompasses the historic church of St. Patrick’s in Fortitude Valley and the Religious and residential community of Villa Maria at Spring Hill. Our cathedral community is multifaceted: it serves as the cathedral of the archdiocese and an active cultural hub for the city; it is also a vibrant and busy inner-city church with its regular rhythm of religious and civic celebrations; and, importantly, it is a parish community serving the needs of all in our local area and beyond. This website reflects these various dimensions of the life of St. Stephen’s Cathedral.
A cathedral is more than just a church and it is certainly more than just a building. The “cathedra”, the bishop’s seat, which is clearly visible at St. Stephen’s behind the altar and beneath the cruciform image of the crucified and rising Christ, distinguishes this church from every other in the Archdiocese. It is not a throne but a chair that signifies the role of the Archbishop as one who teaches, governs and serves the people of God in our corner of the world. The cathedra also marks a point of connection with all other Catholic bishops in all times and in all places.
The Cathedral of St. Stephen is also more than just an attractive or curious building amid the bustle of the city. Its architecture and prayerful routine remind us all of grander, more important and essential things. It seeks to put shape and ritual to our deepest human longings. Next to the cathedral nestles the beautiful original cathedral and the remarkable sculpture of St. Mary of the Cross MacKillop.
Surrounding the buildings is the precinct, which calmly ushers countless commuters to and from work every day and eagerly welcomes them for a relaxing lunchtime break in the sun. The Cathedral of St. Stephen serves the city and the Archdiocese in equal measure.
If you are enquiring about our celebration times (Mass, Benediction, Reconciliation) or preparing for a baptism, wedding, funeral, our sacramental program (Confirmation, First Communion, Penance), or Young Adult Ministry (YAM) please click on the tabs for information. We are always happy to assist with your enquiry, so please contact us at the Cathedral office (07 3324 3030) or visit us at Mercy House. Explore our website as it contains interesting and helpful information, but more importantly, please visit us at the Cathedral of St. Stephen or at St. Patrick’s soon.
God’s blessings to you all.
