Liturgical and Other Ministries
The various ministries of St. Stephen’s parish provide you with a wide variety of ways of connecting with the community. Through these ministries you can learn and grow as an individual, meet others who share your values, and reach out to serve the larger parish and city. We hope there’s something for everyone here.
Liturgical Ministries
The three main liturgical ministries at the Cathedral are Reader, Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist and Altar Server. These ministries require special training and formation as appropriate to the particular ministry.

Readers and Eucharistic Ministers are required be fully initiated Catholics (that is, have received the sacraments of Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation) and commit to being included on rosters that cover the needs of each of the Sunday masses – 6pm (Vigil), 8am, 10am, 12pm and 7.30pm. The frequency of one’s commitment is negotiated with the particular Mass Coordinator of each mass.
Altar Servers are members of the Cathedral Altar Servers Team and are required to be baptised Catholics and to have received, at least, their First Communion. Specialised training is involved in being part of this important ministry which not only prepares servers for participation in the Sunday Eucharist itself, but also for other special liturgical events in the cathedral. All prospective altar servers who are 18 years old or over are required to hold a QLD Working with Children Blue Card.
Persons interested in any of these three ministries should contact the Cathedral Office for more information.
